Pavement

One could assume that the purpose of having pavements is to have a place where pedestrians can walk. China slightly revisited the concept. When you have pavement on the side of the roads, it is mostly used for:
- parking bicycles. With about 10 bicycles per square meter, Chinese really optimize the space on the pavement especially near subway stations or shopping area or office.
- selling. You can buy anything you want from vendors on the pavement: food, drinks, newspapers, clothes, shoes, whatever they can think of.
- repairing bikes: what a better place than the pavement to set up your workshop and repair bikes (or even shoes)?
- smoking: men gather in small groups and stand there smoking, chatting and spitting.
As a consequence, most pedestrians end up walking on the street as there is no space left on the pavement...
