Which is exactly the reason why my calendar has large swaths of "Make Time". At least 3 hours, up to 6 hours on some days, of scheduled time that I reserve for actually getting something done in the office.
I leave sufficient slots in my calendar for random meetings, interviews, etc, but this way they get bunched together on the two days I designate for this.
Finally, head phones are the unofficial "don't interrupt me" sign within the team. If you wear headphones, unless it is urgent, no-one will walk up to you and interrupt. Instead they'll send emails, that I'll look at during breaks between spurts.
